What makes us human?
Higher-order cognitive function makes humans prominent among other creatures. We establish internal representations of everyday experience. In daily life, we continuously receive information about the external world and incorporate it into the previously established internal representations. This process requires continuous acquisition and updating of information. This high-level cognitive function, namely cognitive flexibility, enables us to rapidly adapt to changing environments, an ability critical for survival. Notably, cognitive flexibility is declined in many neuropsychiatric disorders (i.e. schizophrenia, autism), aging, and sleep disorders.
We study molecular-, genetic-, and brain circuit-level mechanisms of cognitive flexibility with the goal to treat cognitive dysfunctions associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, aging, and sleep disorders.
사람이 만물의 영장인 이유는 고차원적인 사고가 가능하기 때문입니다. 우리는 일상생활에서 얻은 정보를 저장하고, 새로운 정보가 주어졌을때 기존에 얻는 지식을 수정/보완합니다. 이렇게 계속적으로 정보를 저장, 갱신하는 능력, 즉 cognitive flexibility는 변화하는 상황에 빠르게 대처하여 생존을 보장하는 기반이 됩니다. 주목할 점은 cognitive flexibility의 감소가 자폐, 조현병 등 여러 정신질환, 노화, 수면 부족 상태에서 나타난다는 것 입니다.
우리 연구실의 목표는 cognitive flexibility의 기전을 분자생물학, 유전학, 뇌회로 영역에서 연구하고, 이를 통해 정신질환, 노화, 수면 부족 등과 관련한 인지장애를 극복하는 것입니다.
What We Do
We take interdisciplinary approaches to determine the mechanism of cognitive flexibility at comprehensive levels. We employ cutting-edge techniques including whole-brain ultrasound imaging in freely behaving animals, viral-genetic approaches, genetic mouse models, molecular techniques, in vitro electrophysiology, high-density electrode recordings in live animals, optogenetics, chemogenetics, computational decoding, etc. In collaboration, we also perform human EEG studies.
Cognitive flexibility의 기전을 종합적으로 밝히기위해 우리 연구실은 whole-brain ultrasound imaging in freely behaving animals, viral-genetic approaches, genetic mouse models, molecular techniques, in vitro electrophysiology, high-density electrode recordings in live animals, optogenetics, chemogenetics, computational decoding 등의 최신 연구기법들을 통합해서 운용합니다. 또한 병원과의 협업을 통해 사람을 대상으로 한 EEG 연구도 수행합니다.
